Winifred [Gwenfrewi]
(d. c. 650)
   Saint.
According to legend, Winifred was a beautiful young woman who was courted by Prince Caradon of Hawarden. She refused his advances and, in his anger, he killed her. She was miraculously restored to life by her uncle St beuno and she founded the monastery at Holywell, Clwd, Wales. This became a place of pilgrimage and healing. Winifred is the patron saint of North Wales.
